She earned a bachelor’s degree in English from Temple and then a master’s and Ph.D. in American Literature from the University of Connecticut. Over the years she served as the director of humanities at Mississippi Technical College, director of the writing program at Texas Christian University, chair of the English Department at the University of Memphis, associate dean at William Paterson University, and then retired as the Dean of the College of Liberal Arts at Marshall University. During her long and distinguished career, she served as the President of the National Writing Centers Association, was the author of eight books and more than one hundred articles and book chapters in journals and essay collections on writing instruction, assessment of instruction, and academic leadership. She delivered over one hundred keynote addresses, lectures, and conference presentations. Her short stories and poems have appeared in over fifty journals and five anthologies. She leaves behind many dear friends and colleagues from near and far, all of whom loved her for her sharp intelligence combined with a deeply spiritual view of the world, her beautiful way with language, her confidence in their abilities, and for her genuine delight in their accomplishments.
